From emails to phone calls to letters, consumers across the country should be aware that scammers often take advantage of holidays to catch people off-guard. Better Business Bureau serving Alaska, Oregon and Western Washington reminds the public to watch out for lepre-cons this St. Patrick’s Day.

Irish immigrants first brought the observance of St. Patrick’s Day to the United States in 1737 and the tale suggests that there are pots-o-gold at the end of rainbows. But don’t be so quick to assume that every rainbow will yield a prize; reports indicate that there has been a recent increase in phishing attempts that claim to award recipients with a St. Patty’s day treasure.

Stay safe this holiday by staying green:

Greet unsolicited emails with caution and never open links or attachments.

Research the company on bbb.org and report dubious activity to the FTC.

Eject suspicious emails or letters; delete emails, run a virus-scan, and shred mail.

Encourage smart behavior; if it sounds too-good-to-be-true, it probably is.

Never give out personally identifiable information to unsolicited contactors.
