Better Business Bureau’s Standards for Trust are a comprehensive set of policies, procedures and practices which focus on how businesses should treat the public. When questioned about which standard it values most, Midnight Sun Home Care—the Alaska winner of BBB’s 2013 Business of the Year Torch Awards—outlined its continuing goal of honoring promises to its employees, its clients and their families, and the community.

Midnight Sun Home Care’s entry details 11 years of honoring promises in affordable high-quality care, consistent personalized service and community investment.

“I feel humbled that we would be selected for the Business of the Year Torch Awards,” says Kevin Turkington, President of Midnight Sun Home Care. “We work really hard at being a great partner in the community, [and] we pride ourselves in the level of customer service that we provide.”

After BBB reviewed applications and nominations, volunteer judges from local organizations—including United Way of Anchorage, Money Management International, NeighborWorks Alaska and Cook Inlet Lending—assessed company entries on three key factors: integrity, involvement and impression. Out of all the contenders, Midnight Sun Home Care earned the highest recognition.

Scholarship: In conjunction with Business of the Year, BBB recognizes Gabriel Creasy of Ketchikan High School as the Alaska winner of BBB’s $2,500 Students of Integrity Scholarship. Students were asked to identify which BBB Standard for Trust they value most in business and Ms. Creasy’s essay on embodying integrity displayed unique insight: “To relinquish integrity is tempting but never the best solution.”
